We aim to use artificial intelligence (AI) in a responsible, ethical, and safe manner, in alignment with our mission to:
- Discover, develop and deliver innovative therapeutics for people with life-threatening diseases
- Remove societal barriers to care and improve health equity
- Foster an environment of inclusion and growth among the Gilead community.
Our AI uses are designed to promote end-to-end productivity, drive efficiencies, improve customer engagement, accelerate the development timeline for therapeutics, and improve patient and customer experiences. These goals aim to be consistent with our general principles for the use and implementation of technology, address the unique scale and complexity of AI, and further our mission. Our development, procurement and use of AI systems is based on these AI principles, and existing Gilead policies.
As a company driven by science and dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life, we are committed to adhering to the highest legal and ethical standards of business conduct. At Gilead, we take responsibility for every solution and system that we use and hold ourselves accountable throughout the AI lifecycle. Our use of AI systems is aligned with – among other standards – the Gilead Code of Ethics, which focuses on the most important principles and expectations about how we work with our customers, third parties, business partners and each other.
We respect and protect the privacy of Gilead personnel, patients, customers, suppliers, third parties, business partners and others with whom we interact. AI systems should be designed to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data used by the AI systems and monitored to mitigate harm and unintended consequences. Our use of AI systems incorporates measures to mitigate these risks, such as adopting appropriate security controls and privacy-enhancing measures.
We work to create a world where everyone, regardless of how they identify, has a fair opportunity to achieve their best health. We understand that AI systems are only as equitable as the underlying datasets and how those datasets are used with respect to AI systems. We use AI systems that account for and minimize underlying bias, and we’re committed to ongoing human oversight to identify and monitor potential bias.
We aim to be transparent about our use of AI systems and the capabilities and limits of those systems, including explaining the purpose, design, function and oversight. This includes explaining how we collect information, how we process such information using AI systems and who we share such information with.
Through human oversight, objective evidence and periodic testing, we focus on identifying whether AI systems align with their intended use or application, and that they adhere to these principles.
We are focused on and committed to our sense of responsibility to our society and future generations. We prioritize efforts in adopting sustainable practices and managing the environmental impact of our products throughout their lifecycle. AI systems are no exception and are designed to consider the future impact on society and planet, and reduce our environmental footprint.
